N2200 with external USB hard ddrive.
Posted by: NAS Rookie - 07-03-2017, 06:42 PM - Forum: N2200PLUS - Replies (2)

Sorry if it is a dumb question, but I have not had any luck getting that part working.

I have accessed USB sticks but not having any luck with a hard drive.

I went into the SHARE FOLDERS and set up - as best I could - a share for the USBHDD, but it isn't there when I try to "browse" to it.

The "NFS" tab is set up to allow access from the IP addresses.    The ACL isn't there as that tab isn't available.

Looking at my existing shares they are like:
sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.0.201:/raid0/data/Movie /home/pi/MEDIA/SHED/MOVIES/ -s -v -n -w -o nolock
(Windows has no luck either.  I'll get to that in a second.)
The "raid0/data/....." part is confusing.

Back to windows quickly.
My windows machine can see the other shares happily, and I tried to browse to the USBHDD with no luck.   HDD plugged in at the time.

I get to navigate to "old" USB drives which have been plugged in, but aren't there now.   But there is nothing there for the existing plugged in USB drive.

Couple of questions about it:
How do I get the USBHDD to be visible on the windows machine?
In linux, what do I put in the path where the :/raid0/data/ part is, or after that....   As needed.
What is the maximum size the drive can be?   5TB ok?
Does it support USB3 drives?   (See above)

Thanks in advance.

Installed OpenMediaVault on Sata DOM on N2800
Posted by: rowdy15 - 06-29-2017, 03:42 PM - Forum: N2800 - No Replies

Hi All,

Just want to let you all know I was able to install OpenMediaVault (OMV) operating system on my Thecus N2800.

Before I go on, if you choose to go through this brief guide then make sure to backup your data of course.

I had to make one modification to the NAS to allow me to install OpenMediaVault.

I bought the following 16Gb sata dom. and installed it in place of the 1Gb Thecus DOM.

Aliexpress SATA DOM

I had to watch this video, in order to help me disassemble the NAS.

I also had to cut the connector that came with sata dom I bought and solder on two female breadbord jumper cables like in the below link.

breadboard jumper cables

As this allowed me to connect the +ve and -ve cables to the motherboard pins (exact same pins used for the other Thecus Dom. (Trust me you'll work it out).

I then made a bootable SD Card (it seems you can't boot from a usb, but you can from an SD card, hence why I used it) of OpenMediaVault installer.

I then hooked up the nas to lcd display with hdmi connection to allow me to change the bios boot drives so that SD Card would boot first.

I then booted into OMV installer and installed the OS (make sure to be connected to the internet via a network cable as you will be asked to install latest updates.... if updates are slow try a different debian updates server).

I then rebooted and the LCD went black, I thought it didn't work (but I left it for 20-30 min to be sure), however I believe it is because OMV is a headless operating system and doesn't have a GUI.

I then forced a reboot of the NAS and connected it to the my home network (because I didn't know why it went black so I thought I would just restart it to see if anything else happened).  If you have trouble here, I actually think I reset the Bios to default settings first and then it booted into the OMV operating system (so it might have been me and how I had set up the boot sequence).

I then looked for the NAS's ip address through my home gateway, (my router).

and navigated to it in the web browser and logged in with the default username (admin) and password (openmediavault).

And then I read lots of OpenMediaVault stuff online to learn how to setup a software RAID, and then install a heap of plugins(in particular Docker).

Why install OpenMediaVault.

The number one reason (among a few) is that OMV has a docker plugin, that has allowed me to install all the docker images on the NAS (really powerful.....Thecus should really make this a priority for their software development).

I actually used the docker plugin to install the Home assistant (home automation software) image and now I have a home automation server that runs all the time on my NAS (I could have used domoticz, but I have read really good things about home assistant).

Number two reason to use OMV is just ram usage.  The NGinx web server uses soooooooo much less ram compared with the apache server module on the Thecus OS.

I also noticed that the web ui is a lot snappier (faster) too.

and finally because I have a 16 gb drive and OMV is a debian distro, I can install pretty much anything debian on it (as if it were a linux computer), which just gives me more freedom (but be careful obviously as you don't want to break your system).

Thanks for reading.

P.S. as a sidenote, when I took apart my NAS I also installed the only 4G ram module on the thecus compatibility list for the N2800 NAS.  I was going to put in another to have 8 Gb of ram, but I am not using anymore than 15% of my ram (cpu currently hovering around 0-1% and ram is at 7% with my web server and home automation server active, along with some other plugins), even with about 5 or 6 openmediavault plugins going at the same time.

Needless to say I am really happy.  The N2800 is an awesome low power NAS (in terms of cpu and motherboard) that just needs some good software to go with it.

Hallo Zusammen,

ich habe die Tage mein N10850 auf die Aktuelle Firmware v2.06.2.10 Aktualisiert. Soweit so gut.

  Clarification: V2.06.02.10 Update
Posted by: mattspew - 06-23-2017, 03:17 PM - Forum: N5550 - Replies (3)

Can I please get some clarification of what this means? I use Samba to connect to multiple Windows, Android and Linux devices.

- Force disabled the SMB1 & configured SMB2 as default for SAMBA security concern. System force disable SMB1, if your client devices unsupported SMB2 would re-enable the SMB1, you may re-enable from NAS ADMIN WEB page: HOME -> NETWORK SERVICE -> SAMBA/CIFS -> SMB Min Protocol -> LANMAN1.

  WOL failure
Posted by: Knyte - 06-22-2017, 10:20 AM - Forum: N5500 - No Replies

Hi, I can't seem to get WOL to work Sad I use WOL from a pfsense firewall, which works fine waking any other device.  Just not my Thecus N5500.

Here is a screenshot of the WOL config (labels have been missing from certain menu items since many firmware revisions ago):

I've toggled to Disabled and back to Enabled, yet a magic packet doesn't seem to wake it up should the power go out (which it does from time to time in our area).  When the power comes back up, I try to wake the NAS with a magic packet, but it stays off.

I've configured link aggregation for the two NIC's, if that matters at all.

Many thanks

Local backup cannot fails in creating tasks
Posted by: SmashIt - 06-22-2017, 01:44 AM - Forum: N5550 - Replies (1)

I recently upgraded to firmware 3.02.00 but lost my local backup tasks. I'm trying to get new ones created but each attempt result in "failure : add task failed"Sad
No matter if I copy from RAID folder to RAID folder or from USB to RAID. It always results in this error.

Btw. I noticed that I also cannot create shortcuts in the file centre app. It also results in an "add to shortcut failed" error message.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I never had this issue in firmware 3.01.04.

Thanks in advance.
