Thecus NAS officially supporting all three new 12TB-HDDs
Posted by: Thecus_Ben - 10-11-2017, 09:31 AM - Forum: News & Announcement - No Replies

After 10TB was the limit since last year, the three biggest hard drive brands just recently pushed the capacity of their products to 12TB and Thecus is now officially supporting these new models.

After thorough testing on a number of their NAS systems, Thecus is happy to confirm that the HGST Ultrastar He12, the WD Gold with 12 TB and the just released Seagate IronWolf and IronWolf Pro with 12TB are compatible with their products. Now you can push your NAS storage beyond the current limits and increase its capacity by at least 20 percent by adding those new 12TB hard drives.

All three aforementioned 12TB-HDDs are using Helium in the sealed casing to achieve those high capacities and improve their power efficiency which is especially important when used in high quantities in data centers. These 12TB-HDDs are drop-in ready for any Thecus NAS to expand capacity and satisfy any storage-needy application or environment.

With this HDD upgrade, the maximum storage space of Thecus NAS has now been raised to a colossal capacity of 960TB when used with the N16850 and four daisy-chained D16000, for example, and therefore almost reaching one PetaByte of total data storage in one simple NAS cluster.

Hard disks do not spin down
Posted by: dieselhatza - 10-10-2017, 04:22 PM - Forum: N4800/N4800Eco - Replies (1)

I've a 4800eco running OS7 (3.02.02.cdv) and 4GB Ram.

The 4 WD-Red (WD20EFRX-68A) with 2TB doing their work in a Raid5 with ext4 filesystem.

Since I've updated to OS7 the disks won't spin down but in OS5 this was working.

The only APP that's running is MCAffee, the other APPS are disabled (In MCaffee is no task defined and updates should be done at 0100 in the night).

What can I do?

After installation don't forget:

After completing the installation and the final tests please remove the whole installer folder from the document root of the webserver or make sure that enable_installer option in config.inc.php is disabled.

$config['enable_installer'] = false;

It is also recommended to change the DocumentRoot in httpd2.4.conf like this:

DocumentRoot "/raid/data/module/Roundcube/bin/roundcube/public_html"

If you want to setup your own server, consider looking at Xeams

  Official Transmission Module 2.92

I've installed this on my N5550 but the app won't start.  I believe it's missing libraries.  Very hard to find information on the official Transmission module.

/raid/data/module/transmission/system/bin/transmission-daemon start

Building Raid5 finished but potential problem?
Posted by: Hixbot - 10-04-2017, 06:03 AM - Forum: N5550 - Replies (1)

Hi there,

So I was creating a 4 disk Raid5 array 64kstripe (not quick raid).   4 x 4tb disks start the building process.  Process slowly moved along steady for about 25hours, then hit 98.1 percent and GUI Stopped updating.  Can't view GUI information on RAID or storage, it just says loading but doesn't load. yet other GUI pages work well.

I wait another few hours, at this point I think the build process must have finished.   I was following the build progress before it stopped updating, and noticed it was moving at about 5% an hour, I'm ready to assume the build process must have finished and a GUI component has crashed preventing me from seeing status.   ( I realize in hindsight I should have used SSH to check it out)

There is zero disk activity, the disk LEDS are not flashing, and I can't hear them spinning.  The NAS display shows Raid is healthy.  So I figure I better reboot it now, hoping I'm not interrupting the RAID5 build, seemed safe to assume it's done.

So I press the power button, I hear the beep for shutdown process, but the NAS doesn't shutdown.  I wait 30 minutes, and decide to hold the power button down and force it off.

I restart the NAS.  This is the log: (read it from bottom up)

"2017-10-04 01:13:43",Info,"[N5550] : SSH service starts."
"2017-10-04 01:13:29",Info,"[N5550] : Healthy: The RAID [Raid1] on system [N5550] is healthy now."
"2017-10-04 01:13:27",Info,"[N5550] : [N5550] boot successfully."
"2017-10-04 01:13:23",Warning,"[N5550] : The RAID [Raid1] on system [N5550] is recovering the RAID and rebuilding is in progress."
"2017-10-04 01:13:23",Info,"[N5550] : Healthy: The RAID [Raid1] on system [N5550] is healthy now."
"2017-10-04 01:13:18",Info,"[N5550] : Healthy: The RAID [Raid1] on system [N5550] is healthy now."
"2017-10-04 01:13:13",Warning,"[N5550] : Your system last shutdown is abnormal."

So according to the log, the raid had to rebuild for 6 seconds after power-on then it was healthy.  There's no entry for Raid build successful... thought that was odd.

Here's the thing, at this point all 4 drives are working hard, LEDs blinking.  It's been doing this for hours, and I'm not reading/writing to the volume at all.   It's as if the raid volume is still building.  The web GUI tells me the Raid volume is healthy.  Why would the disks be so active?  I'm wondering if this is because the raid build didn't finish 100% and had crashed.

I can share the volume and use it, getting about 70MB/s read/write.  but the disks are all working hard at something, while I'm not using them.

Logged into SSH and all looks good:
cat /proc/mdstat
md1 : active raid5 sdb2[0] sde2[3] sdd2[2] sdc2[1]
      11713112064 blocks super 1.2 level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/4] [UUUU]
 mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
          Magic : a92b4efc
        Version : 1.2
    Feature Map : 0x0
     Array UUID : 263a6e6f:ef9d4942:8ab5291f:cfc0ee45
           Name : N5550:1  (local to host N5550)
  Creation Time : Mon Oct  2 23:03:52 2017
     Raid Level : raid5
   Raid Devices : 4

 Avail Dev Size : 7808741376 (3723.50 GiB 3998.08 GB)
     Array Size : 23426224128 (11170.49 GiB 11994.23 GB)
    Data Offset : 2048 sectors
   Super Offset : 8 sectors
          State : clean
    Device UUID : 092849e4:80a5ab2a:d817913d:5fe3a396

    Update Time : Wed Oct  4 04:32:48 2017
       Checksum : 2e58086c - correct
         Events : 28

         Layout : left-symmetric
     Chunk Size : 64K

Device Role : Active device 0
   Array State : AAAA ('A' == active, '.' == missing)

I plan on using the volume and copying my database to it and see how well it performs.  If this unexplained disk activity doesn't stop, I may destroy the RAID and start from scratch.

Has anyone come across this behavior before?  Ideas, suggestions, comments welcome.

Project Goals
ProFTPD grew out of the desire to have a secure and configurable FTP server, and out of a significant admiration of the Apache web server.

When the Project began, the most commonly used server was wu-ftpd. While wu-ftpd provides excellent performance and is generally a good product, it lacks numerous features found in newer Win32 FTP servers and has a poor security history. Many people, including the developers who work on ProFTPD, had spent a great deal of time fixing bugs and hacking features into wu-ftpd. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that a complete redesign was necessary in order to implement the configurability and features desired.

In addition to wu-ftpd, there are a few of other FTP servers available which are designed to be light-weight and secure at the expense of configurability. For example, Troll FTP is an excellent FTP daemon which is considerably more secure and less resource-intensive than wu-ftpd. Unfortunately, while it is quite suitable for basic FTP services, it does not offer the feature set required for more sophisticated FTP sites.

ProFTPD is not a hack based on any other server, it's an independent source tree from the ground up. A number of well known and high traffic sites use ProFTPD.
