SMART notification?
#1
I have got this email notification last night.

Quote:This notification message is generated automatically from [N5550] (192.168.1.100/[2001:984:3a88:1:214:fdff:fe16:9eda]).
The system experienced the following event(s).

According to SMART, the Reallocated_Sector_Ct value[369] of Disk 3 has changed with the previously different [0]. (Western Digital Red (AF), WDC WD20EFRX-68AX9N0, WD-WMC300053439)

Please be aware of the event(s) above. Also if necessary, please react to the event(s).

Everything seems to function al right. Is there anything I have to do to prevent failures?

If I parsed the message correctly, the previous bad sector count was zero, it's now '1'. I wouldn't worry about it for now, though it could be because the NAS was moved while running. However, if the reallocated sector count starts to increase markedly, that's a sign of impending HDD failure. Keep an eye open for hardware suppliers' sales.

Do you have a hot-swappable spare HDD installed in the NAS?

I'm a little bit reassured. Smile
I have no hot-swappable spare installed. But a spare nearby in case one drive is out of order.

A few days ago I got this message:
Quote:The system experienced the following event(s).

According to SMART, the Reallocated_Sector_Ct value[799] of Disk 3 has changed with the previously different [369]. (Western Digital Red (AF), WDC WD20EFRX-68AX9N0, WD-WMC300053439)
And what is disk 3? Is that the third disk from above counting. So in my case the middle one?

Yes. The web interface ( Storage / Disk Information ) should pop up an illustration of the disk position if you leave your mouse cursor on a drive for a second. In any case, the count starts at the top = #1.

In addition, you can query for rudimentary SMART information from that screen, just to be double-sure you've got the right one: Click on the drive, then click on 'Smart' (just above the Disk No. column).

It is indeed the third drive counting from the top.
Today again a message:
Quote:According to SMART, the Reallocated_Sector_Ct value[961] of Disk 3 has changed with the previously different [799]. (Western Digital Red (AF), WDC WD20EFRX-68AX9N0, WD-WMC300053439)
After I run SMART on that disk (short version) I get:
Quote:SMART(HD Tray No: 3) testing has completed, the result is normal.
I'm now running the long version.
I still have no idea what is the problem and If I should renew this disk. :|

A reallocated-sector count of 961 (assuming THAT's what that number is) is bad news - this indicates that the HDD is about to fail. Start shopping, now.
More information here: http://research.google.com/archive/disk_failures.pdf - it's a few years old, but it still applies.

You can check/confirm the HDD SMART data directly with various software. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison...R.T._tools Skip the Thecus test, and read it yourself.
