[ How To ] turn your N2800 into W2800 wth RAID1 and WS2012R2
#1
I will explain you in this post, how to turn your N2800 into a W2800 (not W2000) without any hardware modification and adding a RAID 1 protection on your OS and DATAS

This installation do not harm your DOM in any cases, just using the both hard disk drive.

I cant tell if it works on other models like N5550 or N4800, but i managed to install Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Storage Essential 2012R2 (Should work also with with Windows 8)

Requirement :

1 ) a 8Gb USB Key ( with your Windows Server 2012R2 installer) - You can conver ISO from Technet
I personnally used Windows USB/DVD Download Tool from Microsoft ( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool">http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... nload-tool</a><!-- m -->)

2 ) USB mouse (can be plug on USB3 connector)
3 ) USB Keyboard plugged on USB 2
4 ) HDMI cable (or SVGA) plugged to your monitor
5 ) 2 HDD

------------------------------------------------------------
FIRST STEP PARAMETER BIOS
------------------------------------------------------------

1 ) Turn ON the N2800
2 ) Press F2 to enter BIOS
3 ) Go in Advanced > Serial ATA (SATA)
Change AHCI into RAID

4 ) Go in BOOT menu and modify boot priority, put USB on TOP, followed by your HDD, DOM must be the last

5 ) Press F10 and Y to validate change

Now on boot you will have acces to the ICH10r configuration

------------------------------------------------------------
SECOND STEP PARAMETER RAID
------------------------------------------------------------

On reboot press CTRL+I

1 ) Create your first LUN to host the Windows OS (i choosed a RAID 1 with 150GB allocation and selecting the both Drive)

Done

2 ) Same Step for your Datas LUN

3 ) exit and Shutdown with the NAS button

THIRD STEP INSTALL WINDOWS
------------------------------------------------------------

1 ) Plug your prepared USB into the USB2 and power on the NAS

2 ) Choose the OS Lun for the fresh install (please note here i erased my DOM Partition, dont do it if you want keep Thecus OS)

Please Note : on first reboot remove the USB Key or the NAS will boot on it once again (you can hot replug it once you see the Windows Logo)

All is done you have your Windows installed on you N2800...

------------------------------------------------------------
FOURTH STEP INSTALL INTEL RST to manage RAID
------------------------------------------------------------

now you have a fresh Windows but better if you can manage your RAID

Download INTEL RST (Rapid Storage Technology)

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchR...rodId=2101

And install it...

Initalize the OS LUN

Initialize the DATA LUN

your system will be slow during the initialisation time

Parameter your mail alert in case of RAID problem or else ...

Format your Data Volume, i choosed the NTFS fs (not sure new ReFS is perfomant and usefull in this configuration), with 64k block size for better performances

That all Folks !!!

Have Fun....

You have now a full redondant protected NAS with OS and DATA protected over a RAID1 supporting hot rebuild, hot swapping, and more....

KNOWN ISSUE :

Only LAN Activity is display on the LCD

Disk activity is not display, and Thecus Logo as well (probably managed by the GPIO and Thecus didnt published the drivers), but who cares you have mail alert notification in case of failure Wink

Now let test the auto rebuilt feature if it works Wink

As you can see my RAID Array are clean and inialized

Now let extract an HDD

Immediately the W2800 turn into degraded mode (got notification also on Windows Desktop)

Now I reinsert the missing HDD, automatically RST detect the new HDD insert and start the rebuild

The behavior is Ok Wink

What about Performances ?

I created a Share (SMB), the W2800 is configured without Agregation LFBO, using only a single Gig Nic.
My Source is a W7 x64, 6Gb of RAM and switch is a netgear Prosafe GS108T-200GES

Here is the result with the tools NAS Tester : http://www.808.dk/?code-csharp-nas-performance
each time, i bench with 5 iterations (more iterations you have, closest you are of the real performances, it does a pass mark between the obtained value for each iteration)

I am pretty sure the performance are inpacted due to my WD10EARS HDD which are shitty products, but i have only those one for my test.

Hi Stéphane,

thank you for this excellent tutorial.
Will it be possible to do the same with a TopTower N10850 (after replacing the DVD drive in the upper bay by a SSD)?

Regards

Hi Dieter,

I can confirmed it works on N2800 and N4800ECO, with the ICH10r

In your case, i cant say, never had a N10850 between hands.
some models used 2 controllers, generally IntelICH+Marvell (it is case of N6850)

I am not sure the ICH10r can manage the HDD connected on the other controller.

but you can test with ease (if you have 10 HDD), but basically it sohuld be possible to install Windows.

you can sure use a SSD (to install OS) and remove DOM to connect it, I personnaly prefered use a RAID LUN to have a security on the OS too.
you can also manage RAID with the Windows RAID Software (but this solution is not reliable)

EDIT :

just checked

http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-r...r-reviewed

seems drives are managed by a single SAS cable (sff-8087), may be a RAID Hardware HBA (with expander) can do the trick, if no RAID available in BIOS
Like Areca, or LSI

Thecus answered me

N10850 :

ports 1-2 are Intel ICH, 3-10 are silicon image 3121

on N5550, ijust got confirmation it works too, (N5550 has also 2 controllers, but one is only for eSATA), the 5 HDD are seen in the ICH RAID management Wink
