Hard Disk 6TB - WD60EFRX - compatible with some warnings.
#1
This post is for those who, like me, bought these discs, or for those who are willing to buy them because they are on the compatibility list.

Daily use on a N7510 showed some anomalies that need further investigation (if someone can check on other models would be very useful); At installation time, as provided by the notes, the firmware revision was 2.04.06a.cdv.

1) Errors on multiple discs reported by the display:

Display detects a multiple disk failures that cause panic in any user (in my case at least one set from 12TB raid lost).
Strangely checking through the GUI every RaidSet was perfectly intact and accessible, rebooting the unit the errors disappear an then reappear after a few hours of operation. I'm not an expert but by controlling the output of "dmesg" you see that units with the "X" have actually made several malfunctions, such as "logical unit not ready" or "IO errors when reading sectors ".

I contacted WD tech support that have, of course, advised me to analyze the health of disks with the WD diagnostic tool before sending it for warranty replacement.

I've done several complete smart test (715min everyone) with a negative result, and given the randomness of the discs gradually involved (which would suggest that all disks purchased was defective) I came to the conclusion that the disks are healthy and that the problem occurs when it is activated "disk poweroff function"; For incompatibility with the Thecus firmware, or some defect in the WD firmware (in my case model WD60EFRX-68MYMN0 rev 82.00A82 products between 12 and 14 July 2014) the access timeout seems shorter than the time needed to awaken, causing the chain of errors above (you can check it by giving a console command,wd idle3test in my case, that requires access to the disk, if it is in standbay the first attempt returns an error, fortunately this has not resulted in the drop of the disk).

If you happen the same I recommend you DISABLE FUNCTION OF ENERGY SAVING (from GUI) TO AVOID A POSSIBLE DISC DROP (since I turned off I have not recorded these events any more).

N.B. Some hardware test sites report that the units received for testing had significant changes in performance caused by problems in the NCQ management (and who knows what else), they claim that WD has confirmed the problem but at present not known if it was correct on the later drives with a fw update and if this update will be available for end user or how identify the units that are affected by the problem.

Someone have more information about?

2) New firmware 2.05.04; Excessive increase in the time to Boot.

It is only recently available firmware 2.05.04, if you have these discs avoided the update, for some strange reason the boot time from version 2.04.06a
increased from about 90 sec to more than 500sec, time seems dedicated assembly of the set raid and is proportional to the size of the disks (for a set
Raid5 3x3tb = 90sec, for a set Raid5 3x6tb = 220sec).

The downgrade to the previous version solves the problem.

Before (FW 2.05.04)

What follows is not necessarily related to the type of discs, and this is (at least for me) with both versions of the firmware.

a) After starting, the first copy from the PC to the device (samba/CIFS) for each raid set, get stuck for about 40-60sec with network error and raid led fast blinking, after which, until the next reboot of the unit, the speed and responsiveness of the system remain in operating parameters (immediate start of transfer with speeds between 80 and 105 Mb/s for big file).

b) Scanning for bad blocks; after the warning message on the intensive use of resources, nothing happens ... just log shows the start of the operation but in practice nothing is performed.

I have already reported everything to the technical support, (I'm waiting for the answer) if someone more knowledgeable can confirm (or refute) what I have reported and/or can better analyze the behavior, had the same problems, or have found new, replying to the post, thanks.

Sorry for my bad English, I hope everything is clear.
greetings

Ivan.

[19300.124789] ata8: EH complete

Sorry for my bad English, I hope everything is clear.
greetings

Ivan.

Hi,

Reply from WD:
"The model is not compatible with 6TB RED NAS, has recently been made compatible with 4TB RED PRO better to ask for replacement with this model."

(ok, but the 7710 is compatible ... it is so different from 7510?)

hi,
thanks for reply,
the problem is already under investigation by your support.
(<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://esupport.thecus-eu.com">http://esupport.thecus-eu.com</a><!-- m --> - Ticket No. 523293-PKY - status: Send to HQ)

All discs are cyclically interested in groups ranging from 1 to 4, but with GUI "Disk Power Management" set "off", no problem, (for now), I would prefer not to re-enable it to avoid the risk of having multiple drop (and lost raid).
Thanks for the tip, I will activate the syslog for a better diagnostic.
Kind Regards
Ivan

hi

Update with the beta firmware 2.05.05:

This evening, 10 minutes after start, during the writing of 10gb data, the unit has detect a failure ([X] on dispaly... again) with the difference that the disk was really dropped from the raidset, there seems to be no errors on the disk, all smart parameters are ok.

Disk It is now in test, will take about 20 hours ... after which, if the does not have anything wrong, the new firmware has worsened the situation. :?

Hi,
I just purchased the N7510. It wasn't shipped yet, so I can't tell which firmware version I'll get.
I intend to use WD Red 6TB drives. Can anyone please update regarding the resolution of the above issues? Is there a difference between the WD Red 6TB and the WD Red 6TB v2 in regards?
Thanks,
Ury

Hi Ury,

I am using version 2.05.05 with "Disk Power Management" disabled (this make the difference), and so far I have not had any problems, but I do not trust to re-enable it until it comes out an official firmware that addresses the specific problem (I seems to be available the beta 2:05:06 but I have not tested yet)

regarding discs "red nas v2" (WD60EFRX-68MYMN1), not having them and can not tell you anything, however all your feedback will be welcome.
Regards.
Ivan
