Memory Upgrade - Post Your Results
#1
N5550/N4800/N2800 use the same firmware so this will be posted on all three forums...

All modules that are used with the above units are EXACTLY the same ones that are used with the N8900 which is a 64-bit.
Since they install fine it says that the firmware is 64-bit too.

YET after upgrading the memory to 2x2GB only 3GB are identified.
This makes me think that the motherboard is the problem OR that Thecus limited somehow the amount of memory that can be used (firmware, deep swith, etc).

In order to address the problem all users that upgraded their memory are asked to report the upgrade outcome.
Thanks - Yaron.

Yaron,

With fw 2.03.02 only 3GB was detected in my N55550.
After upgrading to 2.03.03.atom the full 4 GB is found and used.

Code:
CPU: Intel CPU D2550 @ 1.86GHz
Memory: 4017 MB
BIOS: CDV_T26 X64
DOM: Single DOM

Only side-effect it seems to have is that with 2.03.03 and 2.03.04 the VGA output from the unit is showing a pixelstorm, and can not be used anymore at this moment (*)
I have already created a ticket and they confirmed the issue and are looking into it.
I do not know if the HDMI output is affected as well.

(*) I have a VGA/Mouse/Keyboard attached directly to the N5550 so I can control the NAS without using a pc.
During the booting proces I have a useable screen, but while the OS is loading screens turns into a pixelstorm and can not be used anymore.
No problem when using the UI from a network pc, so must use remote control at this time
Thecus N5550 (CPU: D2550 @ 1.86GHz, BIOS: CDV_T26 X64)
Disks:  4*3TB Raid5 (4 * Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 HUA723030ALA640)
Memory:  8GB (2*4GB Corsair CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9)
Firmware: 2.05.14.5 (with MEM=4G removed from menu.lst)

HeMaN - very useful info - THANKS !
Good to know that new firmware was released last night.
My final decision is to buy the unit today because the memory issue was fixed & also because they keep posting mew firmwares.

One last issue is the CPU:
A user on another post claimed his N5550 came with the D2700 CPU (2.16Ghz) while Thecus says the N5550 has a D2550 (1.86Ghz).
I am wondering if there are other users that has the D2700 CPU (2.16Ghz) in their unit.
Might be that there are two different hardware specs of the N5550 & some of the reported problems relates to a specific unit.

So if other users have the D2700 CPU (2.16Ghz) in their N5550 - please report back.
Thanks - Yaron.

I am looking into upgrading the memory of my N5550, but am still wondering what memory to buy. Have you added 1 module of 2Gb memory of replaced the existing module with 2×2Gb modules? And what should I get for the best results?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Just look at the P/N of the current chip & buy an identical one.
Since I have a 4GB chip (DDR3 1066MHz, PC3-8500), my first priority will be 1x4GB placed into one bank, which I believe will give the best results.

Dear HeMaN

The pixelstorm casue from the Intel GFX driver need configure the memory size while early booting stage, thus can't adjust from firmware automatically, and N5550 default at 2GB memeory, thus why 4GB would cause the pixelstorm from localplay/VGA/HDMI, if you need the application for 4GB memory on localplay/VGA/HDMI, please sumit a ticket with the CONF.BIN, and will make a patch file for you to try.

http://esupport.thecus.com/support/

The CONF.BIN can be download from SYSTEM MANAGEMENT -> CONFIG MGMT -> press DOWNLOAD and get the file named 'conf.bin'.

Thanks for your help.
I had already created a support ticket at the european support desk (ZOJ-538424), but now also created a ticket at main support desk (GYX-724432) and added the CONF.BIN.

CPU: Intel CPU D2550 @ 1.86GHz
Memory: 4017 MB
BIOS: CDV_T26 X64
DOM: Single DOM

Disks : 2 x 3Tb Seagate Barracuda's and 1 x 2Tb WD Green in Raid 5 config.

THECUS N5550 V2.03.04.atom

Added Kingston KVR1333D3S8S9/2G module : 2Gb PC3 - 10600 CL9 204-Pin Sodimm

The upgrade seems to have slowed down copying to/from the NAS though significantly though. Strange, maybe should have gotten a single 4Gb module (Anyone having same problem ?)
Memory also seems still to go to almost 100% before it is cleared.

I'm still wondering also why there are 2 versions of the N5550 , the one with the D2700 cpu and the one with the D2550. I also bought him thru Ibood and got the slower model for the same money Sad , not really happy about that.
Not getting the same speeds as other people probably has something to do with that CPU too...

Grts

Edit : Did some futher testing, with only the new module the NAS works again normal. Seems the 2 modules not working together or there is a bug in the firmware when using 2 modules. The modules have same speed 1333 and CL 9 , and both on their own they work fine.

I hope someone else can confirm the problems I am having.

You are right.
After a memory upgrade you must open a ticket with your .bin attached.
This issue was already dealt with in another thread.
